2015 Buick Verano

The discontinued Buick Verano lost three-quarters of its April volume in the fourth month of 2017, a year-over-year drop of 848 sales for the car that was Buick’s best-selling model.

Canada Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model – April 2017 YTD

That 75% drop was enough for the Verano to be Canada’s worst-selling volume vehicle in April 2017.

Also discontinued were the second-ranked Toyota Venza and the fifth-ranked Jeep Patriot.

GCBC has also compiled lists of the 20 most rapidly declining vehicles regardless of volume and the 20 lowest-volume vehicles full stop. Canadians for example, purchased and leased only 11 Kia Cadenzas in April 2017.

The Jeep Patriot, still an active member of FCA Canada’s Jeep fleet despite discontinuation orders, lost two-thirds of its sales in the May of 2017 to end the month as Canada’s worst-selling volume vehicle.

Among continuing nameplates, the Hyundai Santa Fe XL’s 44% drop to 525 units was still bad. The Kia Rio, transitioning into a new generation this year, fell 49% to 356 sales.

The Ford Focus saw a huge decline in sales compared with the same month in 2016 figures, amidst reports of Powershift transmission issues blighting certain models of Focus and Fiesta cars from the Blue Oval. Sales of the Focus in Canada have fallen every year since 2012, with 2016 being the first year sales had fallen below the 20,000 mark since 2004.

A Fiat, a Scion and two Bentleys make up the group of cars which only sold a single unit in Canada in the month of July. The 500L is making way for a replacement due next year, while the Scion tC’s demise marks Toyota bowing its “youth brand” out of the Canadian market after seven years.

In the case of the Bentleys, July’s Flying Spur sale brings the Canadian total for 2017 to seven, while one more Mulsanne on Canadian roads brings YTD sales to 4, on par with the total sold in 2016 as a whole.

Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicles In Canada – August 2017

A near 70% drop for the Dodge Journey puts it atop our Worst-Selling Vehicle By Percentage Decline chart for Canada for August. Less than a third as many Journeys journeyed off of forecourts this August than last.
The Hyundai Accent and Honda Ridgeline, taking 2nd and 3rd spots on the table respectively, both also had less than one registration for every two reported in August 2016.

A lonely Scion tC was the only model with just a single registration in Canada for August, with the high performance Mercedes-AMG GT and flagship luxury sedan the Lexus LS – which is transitioning to the 2018 model – both missing out on their spot in the single-sales club by doubling the tC’s registrations.

You can always select a make and model at GCBC’s Sales Stats page to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures from both Canada and the United States. Pertinent links are clickable at the bottom of this post, but you can also find related links at the Best Sellers page. Mobile users can now thumb across the tables for full-width access.

Our Take On The Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicle Sales Numbers

The Dodge Malibu’s inclusion atop our Worst-Selling Vehicle by Percentage Decline chart is somewhat unfortunate – the 66.3% drop year-on-year is more attributable to a strong September last year, though September 2017 was the Malibu’s second-worst month this year in the Canadian market.

More surprising in this chart is the inclusion of the Honda HR-V in the third slot, with a drop of 41% year-on-year. The HR-V has had a strong year in Canada, posting year-on-year increases for every month between November 2016 and July this year, so it’s puzzling as to why it would begin to drop off now.

Four cars make the single-sales club for September – the Cadillac SRX features as it gives way to the XT5 crossover, alongside the Mercedes-AMG GT, the soon-to-be-replaced Lexus LS and the Acura RLX, also shortly to receive an update for 2018.

Our Take On The Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicle Sales Numbers

Tellingly, four out of the top five worst-selling vehicles by percentage decline in the minimum 250 sales chart in Canada for October are sedans. The Ford Fusion’s woes are echoed by the Hyundai Sonata, BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, with the Jeep Cherokee taking fourth.

The Grand Cherokee also made that list, though sits further down, as sales of that tumbled by 25.7%. FCA’s sales for the month of October were down 12% overall in Canada, with the Jeep brand down 28% year-on-year.

Seven vehicles are in the single-sales club for this month, with the Toyota Land Cruiser joining in with the rest as sales of it dropped from eight last October. The majority of individual-selling vehicles this month are on their way out.

The Ram ProMaster City, which also makes the percentage decline list (and is the only van to feature) is due an update for 2018 model year.

Our Take On The Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicle Sales Numbers

Four out of the top-5 in November 2017’s worst-selling vehicle by percentage decline for those that sold more than 250 units are all SUVs, crossovers or pickups, oddly.

Chevrolet’s seven-seat Tahoe takes the top spot, after sales tumbled 61.1% year-on-year, and is followed closely by the GMC Canyon pickup (down 60.7%), Chevrolet Trax crossover (down 60.6%) and GMC Yukon SUV (down 56.9%).

The first saloon is the fifth-placed Hyundai Sonata, above last month’s chart-topper for this contdown, the Ford Fusion.

Six vehicles made the single-sale club in Canada this month, including the Lexus LS, which arrives as a new model early next year.

Our Take On The Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicle Sales Numbers

Segment-topping small cars the Honda Civic and Chevrolet Cruze were both hit hard in December, declining by more than a third to make our worst-selling vehicle by percentage decline chart.

Multiple other small cars make the percentage decline list, including the Ford Focus, Kia Soul and Honda Fit all featuring.

It’s not just small cars that feature – premium sedans and coupes in the form of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 4-Series also saw sales tumble year-on-year in 2017’s twelfth month, while the BMW X5, Nissan Pathfinder and Honda CR-V are among the SUVs that make an appearance.

Five vehicles feature in December 2017’s single-sale club – the Chrysler 200, Hyundai Genesis, Alfa Romeo 4C, Lincoln MKS and Bentley Mulsanne all sold only a single unit last month in Canada.

Our Take On The Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicle Sales Numbers

The Ford F-Series and Ram pickup make an appearance in the percentage drop above 250 sales chart for January in Canada, with both seeing sales tumble by more that 16% year-on-year.

At the other end of the percentage drop chart sits the Dodge Journey, sales of which fell by almost 75% on last January – by far the greatest percentage drop of any model in the Canadian market in January without falling below sales volume of 250 units.

Fiat’s now ancient 500 and related 500X saw sales plummet over 90%, while the MX-5 Miata – hardly a winter runaround – also saw a steep decline in sales to last January.

Among the six nameplates to sell just a solitary unit in Canada in January are low-volume sports cars like the Dodge Viper (itself also no longer in production) but a couple of higher-volume vehicles make the cut too. The Dodge Dart’s sales have fallen considerably since peaking in Canada in 2013, while the Buick Verano had its 2017 model year cut short as sales fell and is on its way out, with the Encore SUV now filling the hole in Buick’s lineup the Verano leaves.

Our Take On The Top 20 Worst-Selling Vehicle Sales Numbers

Ahead of the arrival of a new model in the summer, the Volkswagen Jetta sits as the vehicle with the second-fastest declining sales year-on-year for February, in vehicles still selling above 250 units per month.

The BMW 3-Series represents the premium volume vehicles here with a 44% year-on-year drop in February putting it fourth. Last month’s fastest-declining volume-selling SUV was the Nissan Pathfinder, while the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter saw the highest percentage drop of any commercial van above 250 units in February.

A solitary Audi R8 was sold in Canada last month, which is joined in the single-sales club this month by the Buick Verano, Jeep Patriot, Dodge Dart, and Fiats 500X and L.

The Jeep Patriot and Buick Verano share the title for largest overall decline in sales volume for February 2018, with both seeing sales fall from 273 each last February to just one sale last month. With both disappearing from their lineups (the Verano lives on in China, where the badge adorns a European Opel Astra, while the Patriot nameplate is disappearing, with the model being amalgamated into the new Jeep Compass), it’s not surprising they each saw such a steep decline this month.
